Fugitive Rwandese Billionaire Kabuga Arrested in Nairobi?

BREAKING NEWS
latest news in developing story:
Moses Wetangula, Kenya's foreign Affairs Minister today disputed that the suspect arrested is Kabuga and the arrest, a matter of mistaken identity. Wetangula says the suspect is Kenyan!

FELICIEN KABUGA ARRESTED IN NAIROBI????

A man suspected to be Rwandese international wanted fugitive genocide suspect Felicien Kabuga has been arrested in Nairobi’s Kawangware’s slums according to sources in Nairobi Friday.
Kenyan Special Crimes Prevention Unit police have conducted DNA tests on a Rwandese believed to be Felician Kabuga.
The man was apparently arrested from a house in Nairobi on Friday night following a tip off from his former aides, said detectives. He was trailed from Kawangware area before he was arrested and held at the Gigiri Police Station overnight and later moved to CID headquarters yesterday.
Earlier, the detectives drove the man resembling Kabuga to a city hospital and took saliva and hair samples from him for a DNA test.
The man in custody reportedly told investigators he is a Hutu and a lecturer at an institution in Kigali. He, however, but could not explain his mission in Kenya.
"You never know because this man can pay someone to impose himself as him. We are very cautious," said one of the detectives.
The team trailed the suspect from Mombasa before arresting him in Nairobi.
Kabuga is the most wanted man in Africa. He is accused of financing the 1994 murder of close to a million Rwandan Tutsis and moderate Hutus, in one of the worst genocides in human history. Co-owner of the Mille Collines radio station used to broadcast a hate campaign against Tutsis in the run-up to the genocide, Kabuga, a man of immense wealth who made his money through smuggling coffee, twice escaped capture attempts in Kenya. In one instance, an informer died mysteriously.
And despite having Sh100 million bounty on his head, the fugitive tycoon has evaded authorities for more than a decade.

In the runoff, Mugabe’s ‘victory’ must not shock

Published for the Standard by Columbus Mavhunga in Harare

Despite presiding over a collapsed economy — probably the worst in the world — Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe can be declared the winner of the June 27 presidential run-off.
While this might turn to be shocking or unrealistic, events on the grounds and history of Zimbabwe prove that Mugabe might claim victory of the elections. This is despite having lost to Morgan Tsvangirai in the March General Election.
In that election, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)’s Tsvangirai rode on the back of a dejected electorate that wanted to end Mugabe’s 28-year rule. The electorate was not happy with the manner in which Mugabe was managing the once-prosperous country.
Zimbabweans went into the March elections with inflation — the highest in the world — officially at 165,000 per cent, now it is well over 200,000 per cent while other estimates put it at more than one million per cent. The county then was facing severe shortages of most basic essentials ranging from fuel, electricity, foreign currency, bread and maize meal among other items. The situation has since deteriorated. The Zimbabwean dollar has become virtually worthless. It is now trading above $500 million (after removing three zeroes) against the US dollar.
The country has a $50 billion note, but that note will not buy much since a loaf of bread costs about a billion dollars!
With all that background Mugabe has made it clear that he will reverse his defeat in March in which MDC leader got 47.3 per cent of the vote.
Mugabe is a veteran in politics; he has been in the game longer than Tsvangirai. That experience is likely to work to his advantage.
Mugabe, shaken by the rebuke he suffered at the hands of voters on March 29, was widely rumoured to be considering resigning. He was out of the public domain for more than two weeks, only to reappear on the country’s Independence Day, on April 18, with venom directed at the West, the whites and its ‘stooge’ — Tsvangirai and the MDC.
Since then Mugabe has not looked back. He has summoned all the resources and experience at his disposal to make sure that the campaign terrain is bumpy for Tsvangirai.
There has been intensified violence taking place mostly in the Mashonaland provinces. This, the opposition says, is targeted at its supporters while Zanu PF makes a counter accusation. Victims, however, say the perpetrators are members of the army and Zanu PF militia.
"We won the March polls, so the violence is being perpetrated by the loser, who has a score to settle with the electorate," said Tsvangirai at a press briefing this week.
Whoever is responsible for violence, it has become apparent that MDC members are on the receiving end and that this is likely to make it difficult for them to go and express their wish on June 27.
The violence has not touched much on the Ndebele-speaking areas in the southern part of Zimbabwe, despite them having voted overwhelmingly against Mugabe. The violence is confined to rural areas in the Shona-speaking areas that used to be Zanu PF stronghold.
"This shows that Mugabe has failed to reign in on the Ndebeles," says Alphas Mukonoweshuro, a political analyst and a strong critic of Mugabe.
Said he: "There was a massacre of the Ndebeles in the 1980s and that did not work. As to whether that will apply after this wave of violence, the jury will only give verdict after the June poll. But generally, violence is a tactic that does not work."
But Mukonoweshuro must have forgotten that the ‘fear factor’ worked before. In February 2000, Zimbabweans voted awesomely against Zanu PF in a constitutional referendum. Immediately after, war veterans unleashed a spate of violence targeted at MDC supporters. In the June 2000 elections, Zanu PF won the elections despite the fact that the situation had not changed for the better.
That tactic, which was later named the ‘margin of terror’ by the late political analyst and nationalist Masipula Sithole, might leave Mugabe a victor in the run-off.
State brutality
Zanu PF has argued that it stopped food aid programmes by non-governmental organisations, last week, because they had been campaigning for the opposition.
It is now using food as a weapon to punish Zimbabweans for voting against Mugabe in the March elections.
"We discovered that some NGOs were campaigning for the MDC hence taking this bold decision to suspend their operations," said Bright Matonga, the Zimbabwe’s deputy minister of Information.
"We want to make the playground level by stopping their operations until the election is over. Those that are not biased can resume operations as soon as we finish vetting them."
Zanu PF is now distributing food at its campaign rallies to bait voters, some of which the US says was food seized from its aid. US says the food consignment was meant for children.
On Tuesday, Tsvangirai said Mugabe had allowed the military to take charge of the country.
"This country is now effectively run by a military junta," Tsvangirai told reporters in Harare. "As a people, we have been exposed to state-sponsored brutality."
On Monday, the Human Rights Watch released a report that blames a secretive body of military and police commanders in the Joint Operations Command for orchestrating the political violence that has rocked the country since the March election.
MDC claims that 66 of its supporters have been killed and thousands more beaten, tortured, wrongfully arrested and forced to flee their homes.
While it has distanced itself from the violence or campaigning for Zanu PF, the army, that the MDC alleges, is now in charge has made clear that it will not accept the MDC in government.
After the March election, Army Chief of Staff, General Constantine Chiwenga, told the media that "the army would not support or salute sell-outs and agents of the West", an apparent reference to the MDC.
Zimbabwe police have made sure that Tsvangirai and his leadership spend more time in detention than campaigning. Since his return home, after spending more than a month outside the country, Tsvangirai has been arrested more than four times — at one time being held for more than nine hours and on Thursday he was detained twice. On all occasions he was released without being charged.
About 10 MDC MPs are either in police custody, are wanted or have a case to answer. The latest being the party’s Secretary-General Tendai Biti, who was arrested upon return at the airport. He faces charges of treason, an offence that carries the death penalty in Zimbabwe.
"These are all trumped up charges just to ensure that our campaigning is reduced to nothing and we concentrate on fighting for our liberty instead of meeting the people," says Nelson Chamisa, the MDC spokesperson.
However, his Zanu PF counterpart, Mr Patrick Chinamasa has a different view: "That (arrests) have nothing to do with the elections, it has everything to do with the law. Let the law take its course. We want a peaceful country. That can only be achieved if the police arrest suspects."
Chinamasa, who is Mugabe’s Justice minister, dismissed the Human Rights Watch that says the chance of a fair and democratic run-off election in Zimbabwe had been "extinguished".
"I am not surprised by such fiction in the report as it is meant to ensure there is something to say after president (Mugabe) is declared the victor. The report is full of patent lies," said Chinamasa. The Human Rights Watch report says, with thousands of opposition supporters found to have been tortured and intimidated by Harare, while others are living in fear, the run-off will not be fair.
The report claims it has evidence that Zanu-PF was responsible for abductions, beatings, torture and killings of supporters of the opposition party.
"Zanu PF supporters are actually the victims and the report conveniently left out that to save its purpose. Despite that, our party will win this second round," said Chinamasa.
Mugabe’s victory must not be a surprise, he and his party has done a lot of groundwork.

Tanzania STOPS Cameroon!!

GO TAIFA STARS GO...
yebo! anything can happen in football...

in a 1st round thrilling world cup qualifier match in dar es salaam, Tanzania today, at the impressive 57,000+ seater stadium, Tanzania's Taifa Stars managed to pull a major upset against the dreaded star studded Indomitable Lions squad of Cameroon. the 0-0 final whistle score left me totally thrilled and excited that alas, those prophets of doom who had earlier predicted a walloping from the Cameroonians have been embarrassed!

playing in front of President Kikwete and a massive turnout that had assembled at the Uwanja Mpya wa Taifa (New National Stadium), Maxio Maximo's boys made real attempts at the Cameroonian goalmouth leaving fans breathless! am may not be an avid soccer fan, but the likes of Samuel Eto'o of Barcelona and Rigobert Song of Galatasaray were totally colourless, much to the chagrin of those Tanzanian 'Cameroon' fans who were out to see the pair raining goals on Tanzania.

i wouldn't want to imagine the noise i would have been making had i attended the match but the fact that i am almost voiceless after watching the match at a local pub makes me feel so proud of Taifa Stars. soccer pundits will have a field day heaping praises at Maximo and the boys but in my opinion Tanzania is showing great progress and stride in formulating a tight team for the future. there still needs alot to be done in terms of experience and the strikers finishing power but who cares! so far so good and congratulations to the BOYS!

i hope the boys can pull another major upset in Younde next week during the return match!

Obama is yet to make History!

You thought you had just closed those pages on that guy Barack and he does an Obama on you and your left with your head spinning, wondering what hit you. You even forget to understand that in defeat you concede defeat honourably because you were not ordained to be the leader of the most powerful country on earth!
History is in the making and the anuls of American political history is about to be re-written. Jesse Jackson, at an officila Summit this week in Africa said that the black revolution started in August of 1954 with the right revolution and is set to climax in August of 2008 with Obama in Office!
Hillary's 'black' supporters are shifting camp in their droves and watch Obama in the next 45 days! They will throw all the vitriol, propaganda and deceit against the 1st generation African American that they can find and summon, but they will not prevail. Obama is too smart for them and will, with the help of God, Prevail.
I hope the WASP (White Anglo Saxon Protestants) syndrome doesnt catch up like it caught up with Kenedy! They dare not try anything funny....
And Hillary, please grow up and stop crying over spitl milk. Barack is the kind of gentleman who obviously knows that you are a vital piece in his entry to the White House, so the brother wont let you down....
Unless Bill's really missing the place (The White House) already>>>

Leon Sullivan Summit ends but...

The 8th Leon Sullivan Summit ended on a high note in Arusha Tanzania. Most of the attending delegates were said to be impressed with the summits success and were already planning to attend Rwanda's 9th Summit slated for Kigali in 2010. My personal highlight of the summit was not all that intellectual flow that crisscrossed and was exchanged between intellectuals in attendance, but the 15 minute $ 50,000 plus impromptu fundraiser by Rev. Jesse Jackson during the Presidential State Dinner! In 15 minutes, at the unknowing invitation of President Kikwete, Jackson went on to impose his goodwill and managed to raise the amount for some primary school in Manyara that they had visited earlier in the day.
The Reverend plea for Africans in the diaspora to adopt a school in Tanzania was also the other real effect the summit will be felt in the immediate future.
All's well that ends well but can someone highlight the past progresses made from past Summits? e.g. what did the last Nigeria Summit resolve to achieve and were these achievements realised for the benefit of moving African and Africans a step further away from poverty, disease, illiteracy, hunger, et al?
Or will these summits be just another favorite annual trip-to-Africa-get-a-way for our brothers across the Atlantic? Leon Howard Sullivan obviously didn't dream this!
One Tanzanian during one of those plenary sessions in the Simba Hall asked how these good discussions would be implemented but sadly the poor guy was brushed aside by the convener of the session stating that the question wasn't relevant and that he needed to confine himself to the topic of the day!
President Kikwete started it all in Nigeria and admonished the delegates there that after the talking, consulting and exchanging of idea's....ACTION NEEDED TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN MAKING THINGS BETTER!
Hope Master, Andrew Young, Carlon Masters are you there??

Leon Sullivan Summit kicks off in Tanzania

The much acclaimed and most prestigious Leon Sullivan's 8th Summit kicked off today in Arusha, Tanzania with style. Albeit starting a bit late (one hour late), to the chagrin of summit guru's in attendance, the first session that aimed to map the way forward for 'The Summit of a Lifetime' 2-6 June 2008 life.
The star attraction of the opening plenary session at the Arusha International Conference Centre was indeed renowned civil rights activist and one time United States Presidential Candidate Jesse Jackson whose comments on building capital capacity as the lasting solution for bring Africa out of poverty riveted strongly across the board.
Former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo, while answering to a panel question regarding the anticipated inflation in the west and its consequences on Africa, eloquently admonished the West to sort of their problems for themselves and for the benefit of Africa, but strongly detested the notion that Africa should limit their friends to the West. He suggested that Africa should be allowed to pursue other friendships such as China, Asia and India even though the West didn't like this fact!
The former Head of State started off by correcting the Wests implanted mindset of thinking that Africa was one big country whilst the continent was a conglomeration of 54 independent countries with different political, social and economic tendencies and strengths.
The former military ruler of one of Africa's largest populations defended Africa's stride in global economies and ended by stating that African democracies were indeed making progresses that should be genuinely appreciated and let to thrive.
ITV, Tanzania premier and leading television station is transmitting the proceedings live in conjunction with Capital television of, i think Arusha. Good job, but I would suggest that they line up prominent experts in different fields to shed light and expound further for the general populace to digest. We don't want to be constipated by so much good food and no due process of the food helping our nourishment. Most of the people watching the proceedings will probably not understand all that English ligua flowing from at-the-moment-bustling Arusha.
Good stuff so far.
Ps: word off Arusha is that the American guests visiting for the very first time the Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area, a world renown tourist attraction, were left breathless and stunned at the beautiful and unimaginable ngorongoro crater scenes. Now at least their view will change about Africa.
